The Derelicte Bus

I’m Not an “Anything”

I’m not a particularly handy guy. I don’t have carpentry experience. I’m not an electrician, welder, or design expert. I’ve learned everything related to bus building from friends and from the internet. Join me on my journey!

The Derelicte Bus at it’s new location. 6 months into the project. May 2018.

What is a Skoolie?

There is a worldwide community of people who see tremendous potential in the frames of old school buses. Old school buses come in many shapes and sizes, but ultimately the bus is a blank canvas for the converter. I’ve decided that I’m going to convert my school bus into a tiny house. I have a few reasons for this:

  1. I used to live in a van and teach kiteboarding lessons. I miss traveling/kiteboarding.

  2. I’ve moved 4 times in the past 4 years. I hate packing/unpacking all the time.

  3. I’d like to collect experiences instead of things

  4. Living minimally is less expensive (no rent, less consumables) and eco-friendly.

  5. I want to learn a new skillset in the process of the conversion.

I’ve been living in my bus since May 2018. While not completed, any money that I’m not paying towards rent is going right back into the bus.

UPDATE: January 2019, I depart on a deployment to the Middle East. While I’m sad to leave the bus sitting for 6 months, I’ll be able to reanalyze some of my plans and finally document things on the website.
